He built his reputation on \u00adexploring far right populism. But his attempt to become a right wing populist has proved to be \u00adanything but popular.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin is becoming a national joke.<\/p>\n<p>He is what passes for an \u00adintellectual in Reform UK circles. That bar is pretty low\u2014but Goodwin\u2019s latest book, Suicide of a Nation\u2014Immigration, Islam, Identity, has spectacularly failed to clear it.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin had to resort to vanity publishing\u2014what a blow to his enormous ego that no reputable publisher would touch it.<\/p>\n<p>His diatribe against \u00adimmigration is based on falsehoods, misleading claims and unreferenced assertions.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin\u2019s opponents are \u00addwelling gleefully on the book\u2019s many flaws. But even those in his own camp are relishing the sight of him squirming and throwing tantrums.<\/p>\n<p>It was on GB News that Goodwin was destroyed by writer and campaigner Andy Twelves who \u00adconfronted Goodwin with a litany of his errors and unsubstantiated claims.<\/p>\n<p>Twelves suggested that these errors were the result of AI \u201challucinations\u201d. Goodwin carelessly left ChatGPT URLs in some of his footnotes.<\/p>\n<p>When challenged, Goodwin ranted that he used AI only \u201cto obtain datasets\u201d, wrongly claiming this is standard practice.<\/p>\n<p>Twelves also claims that \u201cit\u2019s not just factual errors in this book, but basic spelling and grammar ones\u201d. Why should such a great intellect bother with such lowly matters?<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin also includes \u00adquotations from the Roman statesman Cicero, philosopher Roger Scruton, neoliberal economist<\/p>\n<p>Friedrich Hayek and others that appear to have been misattributed\u2014or simply made up.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin breezily refers to \u00advarious academics who are not the renowned scholars he claims them to be, and do not support his arguments.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Tory Tim Montgomerie is now a prominent member of Reform UK. He posted on X, \u201c@\u00adreformparty_uk should now fully investigate Mr Goodwin\u2019s book and if there are repeated examples of factual error he should be removed from the \u00adcandidates list. We need our future MPs to be trustworthy and credible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the idea that Reform UK candidates are trustworthy is hilarious given how many have been dropped for Nazi cosplaying. But if Goodwin is too dodgy for Montgomerie, he really is in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Sixsmith\u2019s \u00adarticle in The Critic magazine, Suicide of an Author\u2019s Credibility, \u00addismisses Goodwin\u2019s \u201cvery bad book\u201d as a work that doles out \u201cslop\u201d to readers.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Harrington of Unherd dubbed Goodwin as a \u201cs\u00adlopagandist\u201d. Suicide of a Nation, she wrote is less a book and more of \u201ca tranche of internet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin used ChatGPT to parade the knowledge you might get from reading books, without the inconvenience of \u00adactually having to read them.<\/p>\n<p>He insists that the main argument of his book is robust. But if it was, he wouldn\u2019t have needed to make stuff up.<\/p>\n<p>England is \u201ccommitting suicide\u201d by allowing immigration, Goodwin raves. The \u201cslow replacement\u201d he describes is a not-so subtle spin on the fascist Great Replacement Theory.<\/p>\n<p>He rants that white Britons are now a \u00adminority in many cities and will gradually \u00addisappear altogether in a few \u00addecades. \u201cWe\u201d are about to be engulfed by a \u201cforeign-born tide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin points his \u00adimperious finger at primary school children\u2014and particularly toddlers. The rising number of children with English as a second language is \u201cnot evolution, it is \u00addisplacement\u201d\u2014that displacement word again.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted, because Goodwin doesn\u2019t, that many \u00adchildren with English as a Second Language are also fluent English speakers\u2014an achievement rather than a threat to the fabric of society.<\/p>\n<p>Migration is being encouraged by pesky elites who \u00ad\u201cfollowed the exact playbook outlined by the Marxist thinker Antonio Gramsci\u2014they captured the institutions\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe Goodwin should have asked ChatGPT what Gramsci actually argued.<\/p>\n<p>In Goodwin\u2019s mirror world, elites are using institutions like the civil service, universities and schools, and the creative industries to \u00adprivilege migrants, support \u00adtrans+ rights and sacrifice free speech to protect over-sensitive minorities.<\/p>\n<p>The elites are in thrall to \u00adsomething Goodwin defines as \u00ad\u201csuicidal empathy\u201d\u2014I counted 74 mentions.<\/p>\n<p>Suicidal empathy is a \u201cmoral virus\u201d and a \u201ctwisted \u00adworldview\u201d based on \u201c\u00adunconditional compassion that always favours outsiders at the expense of your own people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Quite why or how our elites abandoned patriotism and became empathetic is not, of course, explained.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin wants to dismiss the idea of Britain as a \u201cnation of immigrants\u201d. He is simply erasing the history of the enslaved people, the Irish, the Jews and the workers from the British Empire who have all shaped British society.<\/p>\n<p>If Goodwin visited a hospital, a care home, a school, or had a meal out he would know that our public services and our economy depend on migrant workers.<\/p>\n<p>As Robert Winder writes in his book, Bloody Foreigners, \u201cAll the rhetoric that seeks to depict modern \u00adimmigration into Britain as a hazard, putting at risk a thousand year way of life, plays false with the historical truth\u2014Britain has always accommodated strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Winder rightly says, \u201cImmigration is an old, old story, one that defines the texture of British life\u201d. Migration is not the exception\u2014it is the norm of British history.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin wants us to see brown babies as a threat to society while demanding white women \u00adproduce more babies to resupply the depleted labour market.Goodwin quotes population expert Paul Morland as saying that nations that cease to believe in themselves stop reproducing and eventually cease to exist.<\/p>\n<p>What Morland actually writes is that nations that fail to \u201cnurture high\u2011fertility communities will eventually cease to exist as viable nations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We gave up the idea of lying back and thinking of England a long time ago. \u201cBelieving in Britain\u201d is not going to boost birth rates\u2014so the far right will always threaten our reproductive rights.<\/p>\n<p>Racism needs misogyny.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin was very cross about a Women Against The Far Right letter published in the Guardian \u00adnewspaper last September that rebutted far right lies about \u00adviolence against women. Let\u2019s hope he hated the massive Together demonstration against the far right.<\/p>\n<p>Goodwin is bragging about his nasty little book reaching number two on the Amazon sales chart.
