Robin was not, he says, taking from the rich to give to the poor\u2014he was protesting against unfair taxes.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Musk even posted a \u00advomit-inducing AI generated video of himself as Robin.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Yes, Robin reclaimed the wealth stolen from the poor in taxes\u2014but only because they went straight into the coffers of the brutal, bloated aristocracy.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The tale of Robin is a tale of class conflict, of \u00addefending the common land and of freedom from injustice and oppression.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Robin first appears in the records in the 12th century. But it was following Wat Tyler\u2019s Rebellion in 1381 that the legend really took hold. Tyler\u2019s revolt forced a king to negotiate with a mob of \u00adcommoners\u2014before he sent assassins to murder them.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Outlaws thrived when the nobility owned the forests. Aristocrats chopped down the trees for palaces and warships, hunted animals\u2014and hanged \u00adstarving poachers.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The Ballads of Robin Hood were sung throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. They tell of how Robin and his outlaws undermine the social order by disguising themselves as state \u00adofficials, robbing churchmen, and \u00adliberating condemned \u00adprisoners and women forced into marriage.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In the famous ballad, A Lyttell Gest of Robyn Hode, Robin lays out his class\u2011conscious guide to being an outlaw. Leave farmers alone, he advises\u2014<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cBut these bishops and these archbishops \/ You shall them beat and bind \/ And the High Sheriff of Nottingham \/ Keep him on your mind.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>As historian Stephen Thomas Knight points out, \u201cThe Gest advocates massive theft from the church, and civic \u00adinsurrection against and murder of a properly appointed Sheriff.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Robin, and the characters that attached \u00adthemselves to legend\u2014Little John, Friar Tuck and Maid Marian\u2014were celebrated across England in the riotous May games. These \u00adcelebrated sexual f\u00adreedom and \u00addefiance against authority.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The \u00adsymbolic radicalism of Robin Hood often spilt over into real rebellion. In 1555 the Scottish \u00adparliament \u00adactually banned celebrations involving Robin\u2014but it didn\u2019t work.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In 1516, in Edinburgh, apprentices came together \u201cefter the auld wikid maner of Robene Hude\u201d. They elected a leader as \u201cLord of Inobedience\u201d and stormed past the magistrates, through the city gates and up to Castle Hill. Here, they refused to accept the usual wages.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>During the \u00adrevolutionary upheavals that marked the birth of \u00adcapitalism, Robin\u2019s legend expressed revulsion at the enclosure of the common land and \u00adpolitical tyranny.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In 1795 the radical Joseph Ritson, a friend of the poet William Blake, wrote his famous Life of Robin Hood which was reprinted throughout the 19th century.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Ritson\u2019s Robin was \u201ca man, who, in a barbarous age and under a complicated \u00adtyranny, \u00addisplayed a spirit of freedom and independence which has endeared him to the common people, whose cause he maintained\u2014for all \u00adopposition to tyranny is the cause of the people\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In 1817, poet John Keats evoked Robin and Marian to condemn war and the commodification of nature, writing\u2014<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cAnd if Robin should be cast \/Sudden from his turfed grave \/ And if Marian should have \/ Once again her forest days \/ She would weep and he would craze \/ He would swear, for all his oaks \/ Fall\u2019n beneath the dockyard strokes \/ Have rotted on the briny seas \/ She would weep that her wild bees \/ Sang not to her\u2014strange! that honey \/ Can\u2019t be got without hard money!\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Robin was also brought in to serve those constructing a new British nationalism.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The novelist Walter Scott portrayed Robin as a decent Anglo-Saxon, fighting off the Norman invaders.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Robin became the wronged Earl of Locksley, a man of noble birth, as he made the transition from page to screen.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Perhaps the most \u00adinfluential film portrayal was Errol Flynn\u2019s 1938 film, in which Robin swash\u00adbuckles \u00adathletically against a Norman foe whose fashion and \u00adarchitecture appear \u00addecidedly fascistic.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The Robin of the 1950s TV series, written by US Communists on the run from the FBI, reclaimed the \u00adradical Robin.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Not even Kevin Costner\u2019s dreary Robin or Russell Crowe\u2019s thuggish Robin could crush the legend of the rebel against authority and the symbol of a better world.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/reviews-and-culture\/reclaiming-the-radical-legend-of-robin-hood\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"feedzy-rss-link-icon\">Read More<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Here_begynneth_a_gest_of_Robyn_Hode_1_cropped.png\" title=\"Reclaiming the radical legend of Robin Hood\" \/><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Robin hood was a symbol of defiance for centuries as in this 16th century woodcut (Photo: WikipediaCommons) \u00a0 Elon Musk is trying to claim Robin Hood for the Maga right.
