\u00b7 \u201cWords wage war,<\/strong> meanings being missed,\u201d sings James Dean Bradfield on Orwellian<\/em>\u2014first single from the new Manics album The Ultra Vivid Lament<\/em>\u2014\u201cI\u2019ll walk you through the apocalypse.\u201d<\/p>\n

What an apocalypse the past 18 months has been. Main lyricist Nicky Wire told Under the Radar<\/em>: \u201cOne thing lockdown did give us was time just to rehearse, and face each other musically. Really dig in to try and make a record that we could play and be natural with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the most concise and beautiful set of lyrics that Nick had given me in over 10 years,\u201d James told NME<\/em>. \u201cI got so bombarded with opinion, all the time,\u201d Nicky adds, \u201cthat I retreated into myself on this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Citing \u201cABBA and The Clash\u201d as the blueprint for the new album\u2019s sound, it helped that James was gifted a century-old piano from his elderly neighbour a couple of years ago. He already wrote a top 10 album on it\u2014last year\u2019s solo effort Even in Exile<\/a><\/em> about Chilean socialist folk hero, Victor Jara, with Nick\u2019s poet brother Patrick Jones on lyric duties. Now that piano, which James only taught himself to play since he got it, has worked its magic on a Manics album.<\/p>\n

ABBA and socialism<\/h4>\n

And what an album it is. The Manics are at their most experimental and relaxed on this album. The tracks are massive\u2014\u2018glacial\u2019 is the new \u2018widescreen\u2019\u2014but this time, much more subtle in their use of textures, tempo and space. Like Lifeblood<\/em> without its brilliant white straightjacket; like Futurology<\/a><\/em> covering Rewind the Film<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On Don\u2019t Let the Night Divide Us<\/em>, the Manics channel ABBA to attack the Tories and champion socialism:<\/p>\n

\n

Don\u2019t let those boys from Eton<\/span><\/span>
Suggest that we are beaten \u2013 no, no, no<\/span><\/p>\n

A land now so infected<\/span>
Can be free and equal<\/span>
And when the sunlight bathes us<\/span>
With sympathy and kindness<\/span><\/p>\n

We have the cause and the conscience<\/span>
W\u0435 have the plans and the purpose<\/span>
The light will come and find us<\/span>
Don\u2019t let the night divide us<\/span><\/p>\n

Reject all propaganda<\/span>
They can\u2019t hide from truth\u2019s arrow<\/span>
Vengeance will be yours and mine<\/span>
We may use peace or violence<\/span>
We may wage war or silence<\/span>
This is a warning not a prayer<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Don\u2019t Let the Night Divide Us<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

James: \u201cThat Eton line is just saying that once the balance has been tipped towards an egregious amount of privilege being displayed, then inevitably it must swing back the other way at some point. When it does, you\u2019ll see something good. The working classes will still give you an amazing band\u2014they\u2019ll still give you an amazing writer.\u201d<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t get over how magnificent Quest For Ancient Colour<\/em> is, with it\u2019s noble piano opening, Sean Moore\u2019s swift little Motown drum rolls taking things to another level. It\u2019s not a Covid album but the pandemic, Brexit and its polarising effect especially on social media, Richey\u2019s eternal presence and absence, and the death of Nicky\u2019s parents in recent years all run through the album, addressing the theme of loss.<\/p>\n

Quest For Ancient Colour<\/em> is no exception, and is possibly about Wire\u2019s re-analysis of old photos and footage again, akin to remembering a distant dream, and the deconstruction of what it means to be a Manic Street Preacher in these times:<\/p>\n

\u201cModern life was killed and crushed by a derelict digitised love. My scream had lost its source, like a reservoir in a summer drought.\u201d Other times, Nick\u2019s at peace with the nothingness, like on Happy Bored Alone<\/em>: \u201cBoredom was always my best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every chorus is essential and vivid. The Secret He Had Missed<\/em>, with its irresistible ABBA-esque hooks; and Orwellian<\/em>: \u201cEvery way you look, every way you turn, the future fights the past, the books begin to burn.\u201d Nicky: \u201cThat track is about the battle to claim meaning, the erasing of context within debate, the overriding sense of factional conflict driven by digital platforms leading to a perpetual state of culture war.<\/p>\n\n

NICK CLEGG: Lib Dem \u201cpolitical oblivion\u201d heritage<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe tyranny of social media\u2014the very worst platforms, they just make me think of Nick Clegg [working at Facebook] in California, dictating people\u2019s futures. How the fuck did that happen? The man who led his party into political oblivion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diapause<\/em> has a feel of The Clash to me, in its late-night, relaxed confidence; somewhere between London Calling <\/em>and Combat Rock<\/em>, leaning more towards Spirit of St Louis <\/em>than Sandinista!<\/em> Which can only be good, right?<\/p>\n

The Ultra Vivid Lament<\/em> is not just an organic, beautiful record\u2014it\u2019s a brave, stunning, glorious classic that deserves to be as huge as This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Next on the Manics agenda is a remastered special edition of Know Your Enemy<\/em>, which the band debuted at the Karl Marx Theatre, Havana, Cuba in 2001\u2014Fidel Castro coining the phrase \u201cLouder than war\u201d, describing the gig\u2019s soundcheck when he met the band. (Castro left halfway through the gig when he realised they weren\u2019t playing Sleepflower<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

And Nicky has a solo jazz\/indiepop album ready to mix. Really. You\u2019ve been warned\u2026<\/p>\n

NHS gigs<\/h4>\n

But before all that, the little matter of gigs. The Manics are playing two massive sold out benefit shows in Cardiff for NHS charities in September (with free tickets for NHS staff the first night) before touring the new album. We all know Covid isn\u2019t over though, and that\u2019s playing on Nick\u2019s mind:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re worried for the audience as much as ourselves. I\u2019m not affected anywhere near as much as those in events doing it for the love of it and enjoyment, employment, you name it. It\u2019s heartbreaking, whether you\u2019re a small venue somewhere or putting on a festival. They\u2019ve been left out to dry.\u201d<\/p>\n
