And using that weapon is the theme of a new exhibition at the brilliant People\u2019s History Museum in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>On the Line\u2014100 Years of Strikes and Solidarity is just as good as it sounds.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition starts, of course, with the General Strike of 1926. This was a moment in which huge \u00adpossibilities for radical change opened up, only to be crushed by the brutality of the state and the treachery of the trade union leaders.<\/p>\n<p>But, as the exhibition notes say, the lessons learnt in this bitter defeat would lay the groundwork for future strikes.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of many strikes is the battle for a living wage and for shorter working hours.<\/p>\n<p>But the late 1960s and 1970s also saw strikes against racism in the workplace and for equal pay for women.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00adexhibition notes tell us, \u201cThe ways and places where people work may have changed, but \u00adsimilar issues remain today. Inequality, dangerous working \u00adconditions, low wages and unfair contracts have not gone away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition \u00adhighlights campaigns by women \u00adworkers for equal pay.<\/p>\n<p>There are brilliant posters from the 1970s and a photo of the women who led the historic strike for equal pay at Ford Dagenham car plant in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>A sizeable \u00adsection of the \u00adexhibition is devoted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/in-depth\/thirty-years-since-the-grunwick-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grunwick strike<\/a> of 1976\u20117. Here, a workforce of mainly Asian women took on their bosses, winning \u00adsolidarity from the whole union movement.<\/p>\n<p>There is a great poster from the time, in the style of the Red Wedge image first created by El Lissitzky after the Russian Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Other \u00adexhibits focus on the \u00adwomen\u2019s faces, their joy and determination.<\/p>\n<p>Other highlights include the fight to stop troops being used to scab on the Glasgow bin workers\u2019 strike in 1975, and the huge \u00adcampaign to free the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/in-depth\/when-the-law-lost-how-mass-strikes-freed-the-pentonville-five\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pentonville \u00addockers<\/a> in 1972. Five \u00addockers were locked up in Pentonville for \u00adtheir refusal to obey a court order to stop \u00adpicketing.<\/p>\n<p>An \u00adinspiring photo shows thousands of dockers and trade \u00adunionists marching to the prison \u00addemanding their release. The five were released the day after the photo was taken.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent \u00addisputes featured include the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/news\/amazon-coventry-strikes-workers-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Coventry<\/a> warehouse strikes of 2023\u20114.<\/p>\n<p>And, while not on the same scale, this shows how workers still use the strike as a \u00adcollective weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition includes not just posters and photos, but badges and T-shirts, such as the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners <a href=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/news\/veteran-activists-remember-lgbt-solidarity-with-miners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T-shirt<\/a> from the 1984-5 strike.<\/p>\n<p>There is even a \u00adtruncheon that was given to a scab \u00advolunteer in 1926 to use against striking workers.<\/p>\n<p>The images and objects \u00addemonstrate how one act of \u00adresistance can inspire another, how each step \u00adcontributes towards \u00adachieving change for the many.<\/p>\n<p>The museum says, \u201cVisit On the Line and \u00adwitness the strength of collective power, uncover the \u00adbattles fought, the \u00adsolidarity shared, and the lifelines which have united workers throughout \u00adhistory to today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This couldn\u2019t be more true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/reviews-and-culture\/new-exhibition-uncovers-a-century-of-struggles\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"feedzy-rss-link-icon\">Read More<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/socialistworker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/wrjNCmZQ_cropped.png\" title=\"New exhibition uncovers a century of struggles\" \/><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A poster from the Grunwick strike, in the style of El Lissitzky (Photo: The People\u2019s History Museum) \u201cThe strike is the weapon of the oppressed\u201d, said Eugene V Debs, American socialist and striker.
