It\u2019s fallen a little out of fashion. But it\u2019s a different story when a masc lesbian comic delivers that material \u2013 a story of gleeful iconoclasm, big laughs and twisty gender logic. Ashley Gavin was a jobbing standup who blew up online during the pandemic, and whose output \u2013 including viral \u201ccrowd work\u201d clips and the podcast We\u2019re Having Gay Sex \u2013 has secured an ardent, largely queer fanbase. She\u2019s like their best pal or big sis tonight, recounting how a woman who dresses like a teenaged wannabe car mechanic (and who \u2013 tongue firmly in cheek \u2013 considers more feminine women to be \u201ca bunch of pussy-ass bitches\u201d) came to be freezing her eggs.<\/p>\n<p>The pleasure is in how Gavin lays siege to gender convention, with one routine after another scrambling the signifiers of what we expect men, women, or indeed masculine lesbians, to do and be. The opener finds \u201clesbian with a Brazilian\u201d Gavin submitting herself to a waxing treatment. Elsewhere, the New Yorker ventures the argument \u2013 while savouring the discomfort it generates \u2013 that the clitoris is essentially a \u201ctiny dick\u201d.
