Yet, curiously, it is a line from O\u2019Hara\u2019s poem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/53219\/mayakovsky\">Mayakovsky<\/a> that Francesca de Tores refits for Selkirk\u2019s mouth at the opening of her new novel, Cast Away.<\/p>\n<p>Selkirk insists that he is cast upon the island \u201conly by the catastrophe of my personality\u201d \u2013 \u201cwhich is a sobering thing, even for a man used to being sober\u201d. And while the O\u2019Hara of Mayakovsky is famously content to wait \u201cfor the catastrophe of my personality \/ to seem beautiful again, \/ and interesting, and modern\u201d, Selkirk \u2013 newly and utterly alone on \u201ca stony blemish in the ocean\u201d, 400 miles off the coast of Chile \u2013 spends his first three days and nights on the island blind drunk on the cask of flip left behind with him as a courtesy from his\u00a0erstwhile crewmates, raging at his\u00a0fate.
