Culture | The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Political oppression in Tehran, a witch\u2019s tale from France, a film-maker in Nazi Germany \u2026  we weigh up the contenders for the International Booker prize 2026<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s International Booker prize shortlisted titles are a diverse bunch, both geographically \u2013 from Brazil to Taiwan \u2013 and in style, from mainstream blockbuster to experimental jeu d\u2019esprit. As in recent\u00a0years, independent presses are rewarded for their efforts in promoting translated fiction, providing four of the six titles. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2021\/sep\/10\/why-translators-should-be-named-on-book-covers\">campaign<\/a> for proper recognition of translators is finally paying off: for the first time in the prize\u2019s 10-year history, all six books name the translator on the front cover. Here\u2019s our guide to the prospects for each, ahead of the winner announcement on 19 May.<\/p>\n<p>German-Iranian novelist Shida Bazyar reminds us in her novel <strong>The Nights <\/strong><strong>Are Quiet in Tehran<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Scribe), translated by Ruth Martin, that the people of Iran are the victims of history many times over. The story comes from four members of an Iranian family over 30 years. In 1979, young Behzad greets the Islamic revolution that deposes the Shah, but his hopes for a communist utopia (\u201ca new Cuba\u201d) are thwarted. Instead, he\u2019s surrounded by people who have been waiting for the chance to become bullies all their lives.
