Its publisher was convinced it would be a commercial disaster. Critics complained it was mostly just \u201cnoise\u201d and predicted that it would quickly be forgotten. But more than 125 years since Tosca\u2019s premiere in January 1900, Giacomo Puccini\u2019s fifth opera remains one of the most bankable in the business.<\/p>\n<p>We love a hard-won success story in classical music. Think of the tales of woe that still swirl around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/jul\/01\/know-the-score-beethoven-where-to-start-with-his-music-250th-anniversary\">Beethoven\u2019s life and works<\/a>, with their implied happy ending in our own Beethoven centrism. Or there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2010\/dec\/11\/richard-wagner-tannhauser-opera\">Wagner\u2019s Tannh\u00e4user<\/a> being booed off the stage in 1861, before finding its way into the operatic pantheon.
