But what was 1976 <em>really<\/em> like before punk arrived? From swing bands to \u2018spaghetti rock\u2019, we discover a lost history<\/p>\n\n<p>In January 1976, the cover of the NME didn\u2019t feature an artist, but a photo of a room damaged by an IRA bomb: there had been a string of terrorist attacks in London the previous year. The headline: \u201cIs rock\u2019n\u2019roll ready for 1976 \u2026 Is 1976 ready for rock\u2019n\u2019roll?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the accompanying feature, writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2013\/jul\/29\/mick-farren\">Mick Farren<\/a> was to be found complaining vociferously about the state of music. Audiences are \u201cprepared to tolerate just about anything\u201d. Rock has \u201clost its guts\u201d and \u201cis on an unalterable course to a neo-Las Vegas\u201d, because artists are \u201ctotally insulated from the real world\u201d and thus making music that \u201cseems so damned irrelevant to real life\u201d.
