Half-skeleton, half-cage, the ship is relentlessly claustrophobic, its hard edges softened only by coils of rope, hammocks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pauleconstable.co.uk\/\">Paule Constable<\/a>\u2019s subtle, painterly lighting. No wonder the opera\u2019s crowd of male bodies \u2013 clad here in spotless Napoleonic naval uniforms and grubby workwear \u2013 carries a palpable charge: visceral, violent, erotic. Thanks to the curved deck, those standing centre-stage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christopheroram.co.uk\/\">Christopher Oram<\/a>\u2019s set appear as if through a fish-eye lens or one of the officer\u2019s telescopes. In this floating world at war, everyone is subject to scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>Premiered at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2010\/may\/21\/billy-budd-review1\">Glyndebourne in 2010<\/a>, Grandage\u2019s production is now in the hands of revival director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glyndebourne.com\/persons\/ian-rutherford\/\">Ian Rutherford<\/a>. The lines are firmly drawn between the goodness of the piece\u2019s \u201cangel\u201d Billy Budd and the malevolence of its villain, John Claggart, whose \u201csexual discharge gone evil\u201d (librettist EM Forster\u2019s words) results in Budd\u2019s death. Budd swings across the stage, lithe as a gymnast, unique in his physical ease. Claggart cowers and barks.
