Choreographer Oona Doherty\u2019s astonishing early works, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2019\/oct\/15\/oona-doherty-review-the-yard-london-hope-hunt-and-the-ascension-into-lazarus\">Hope Hunt<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2019\/aug\/22\/hard-to-be-soft-a-belfast-prayer-review-edinburgh\">Hard to be Soft<\/a>, marked her as an unique (urgent, unfiltered) voice moving in uncharted territory. Her output since has been more variable, although she\u2019s always utterly her own woman.<\/p>\n<p>Doherty\u2019s last major piece, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2025\/may\/11\/oona-doherty-specky-clark-review-dance-sadlers-wells-london\">Specky Clark<\/a>, was high concept. This new world premiere, Leather Jacket, feels the opposite, not quite enough concept. (I know, you can\u2019t win.) The leather jackets of the title are being worn by eight dancers. Under bright fluorescent lights in the concrete space of Bold Tendencies \u2013 the Peckham multi-storey car park turned theatre \u2013 the dancers all slap one foot to the ground in a heavy thud, and again, and again, keeping a determined rhythm. It\u2019s a thrill to be up close as foot slaps turn to thigh slaps, then bounces, then into Doherty\u2019s own skewed kind of Irish step dance, matching the shift from electronic score to Cormac Begley\u2019s experimental Irish folk music.
