Frida: The Making of an Icon, a new exhibition at London\u2019s Tate Modern gallery, tells you \u00adlittle about Frida Kahlo<\/a> as an artist.<\/p>\n

The Mexican painter was one of the most influential artistic and cultural figures of the 20th century, but here she is reduced to almost nothing.<\/p>\n

The exhibition begins by \u00adpatronisingly calling Kahlo a \u201crule breaker\u201d, \u201ca devoted wife\u201d and \u201ca political activist\u201d.<\/p>\n

Though all those things are \u00adtechnically true, they present a \u00adsanitised image of a radical \u00adsocialist\u2014and ignore decades of affairs.<\/p>\n

The exhibition erases the reality of her life and her politics.<\/p>\n

It does present an impressive selection of her works ranging from early experiments to major pieces later in her life.<\/p>\n

It is also a surprisingly good introduction to Mexican art from the 1920s to 1950s. But any \u00adcritical analysis, narrative or necessary context is missing.<\/p>\n

Kahlo was a leading member of the Mexican Communist Party.<\/p>\n

She spent her life relating her work to the Mexican Revolution\u2014which lasted from 1910 to 1920. She documented her disability\u2014from childhood polio and a near-fatal bus crash\u2014the reality of women\u2019s oppression and workers\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n

She devoted herself to making art that would be \u201cuseful to the \u00adrevolutionary communist movement\u201d.<\/p>\n

Despite this, the only mention of her politics is to say that she was involved in \u201csocial activism such as feminism\u201d.<\/p>\n

Luckily, her works speak for themselves. The paintings clearly demonstrate the divides that defined her life.<\/p>\n

A defining moment was a bus crash in which she was impaled on a metal rod through the pelvis.<\/p>\n

Numerous paintings, sketches and a medical corset she\u2019d painted over demonstrate how being a \u00addisabled person had a huge impact on her life.<\/p>\n

Kahlo\u2019s famous self-portraits dominate the exhibit. In Memory (The Heart) she is depicted \u00adstraddling solid land and water.<\/p>\n

In The Two Fridas, she is seen twice\u00ad\u00ad\u2014the European Frida and the Mestiza Frida\u2014representing her father and mother respectively.<\/p>\n

In other works, we see the \u00addevotion she felt for her husband Diego Rivera<\/a>\u2014but also the \u00adturbulent reality of their relationship.<\/p>\n

Then there is her childhood and aspirations before the bus accident and the life she built for herself after.<\/p>\n

The exhibition both diminishes and fetishises Kahlo\u2019s Mexican identity\u2014as confusing as she found it herself.<\/p>\n

The curators refer to her \u201cadoption of a Mexican persona.\u201d This must have been easy for her\u2014given she was born and raised in the country.<\/p>\n

A second part of the exhibition features artworks inspired by Kahlo.<\/p>\n

Some of these are very interesting. And it\u2019s important to note how massively influential she has been. But it became repetitive.<\/p>\n

There are nearly three rooms \u00adripping off one work, The Two Fridas.<\/p>\n

One room, without any \u00adanalysis, is full of magnets, teapots and t-shirts\u2014you name it\u2014plastered with her image.<\/p>\n

It would have been very easy to provide a critique of this crass \u00adcommercialisation. Instead, this room exits into the gift shop.<\/p>\n

It is inspiring to be surrounded by her work. But the Tate has failed her and her work.<\/p>\n

It is insulting to see such an \u00adincredible woman\u2014a \u00adgroundbreaking artist and life-long revolutionary\u2014turned into nothing more than a poster.<\/p>\n

I left thinking, \u201cWhy do women have to be consumable?\u201d<\/p>\n
