She explores why reading can create a particularly intense bond with a favourite writer<\/p>\n<p>In the summer before university, my mother gave me a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/the-pursuit-of-love-9780241984079\/\">The Pursuit of Love<\/a>. We\u2019d moved countries at the beginning of my A-levels and those months in between had been defined by a level of loneliness I had never known in my life. The sort of loneliness so acute and pervasive it feels like panic, and on top of all that, so shaming to be 17 with nowhere to go and nothing to do on a Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, my mother \u2013 a great reader \u2013 would say: \u201cWhen you\u2019ve got a book, you\u2019ve got a friend,\u201d which is why, presumably, I wasn\u2019t a great reader. Then, I\u2019d always had actual friends.
