With their twangy sound, madcap outfits, lusty yodelling and pirouetting pirate frontman, the band became global superstars almost overnight. But, as their guitarist Marco Pirroni recalls, the thrill ride soon hit the buffers<\/p>\n

\u2018The essence of pop is, one, brilliant fucking songs \u2013 and the rest is sex, subversion, style and humour. And that was us<\/em>.\u201d So Adam Ant told me in 1995, describing the reconstructed Adam and the Ants, which formed in early 1980 with the arrival of guitarist\/songwriter Marco Pirroni, who was sitting next to him. \u201cWe\u2019re responsible for bringing back dressing up, going mad and screaming your head off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it!\u201d grins Pirroni when I remind him of this, as we sit in the shabby-chic lounge of London\u2019s 21Soho venue. Back then, I didn\u2019t tell them I was 15 in 1980, forever sprinting across dancefloors pretending to be<\/em> Adam Ant, chiffon scarves tied to knees, limbs flailing like a whirling Cossack. Pirroni hears this today and laughs. \u201cThat\u2019s what it\u2019s all about,\u201d he hoots. \u201cWhen I was 13, watching Bowie, Roxy, T Rex, you just go, \u2018I wanna do that.\u2019<\/em> It\u2019s exciting, sexy, about looking good, Top of the Pops. I can\u2019t imagine anyone saying, \u2018Wow, I desperately want to be in Cabaret Voltaire. They must be earning no money, look boring and nobody likes them \u2013 that\u2019s the band for me!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
