The ex-marketing manager\u2019s win, for his spoof Sycamore Gap-inspired whodunnit Rewilding, arrives just as he\u2019s gearing up for a new season of hit sketch show SNL UK \u2013 which he calls \u2018the hardest job of my life\u2019<\/p>\n

For the last month, Chris Cantrill has been performing his fringe show Rewilding<\/a> daily in a lunchtime slot. And yet, when we plan to speak about his victory in the Edinburgh comedy awards<\/a>, the interview is arranged \u2013 on the festival\u2019s penultimate day \u2013 for lunchtime. Can he really have won the fringe\u2019s major prize, and \u2013 hell of a mic drop, this \u2013 immediately sacked off his last two shows? \u201cI couldn\u2019t be happier not to be at the festival today,\u201d he says, on video call from his Northumberland home. But the cancellation, it transpires, is long-standing, because work starts immediately post-fringe on the new series of SNL UK<\/a>, for which he writes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m absolutely over the moon not to be doing my show right now,\u201d he admits. \u201cI\u2019ve got a lot of adrenaline in my body slowly seeping out, and I feel like I\u2019ve been hit by a train.\u201d The Edinburgh comedy award (it used to be the Perrier, and was won in the past by Steve Coogan, The League of Gentlemen and Frank Skinner) has been a long time coming for Bradford-born Cantrill. This year\u2019s was his fourth nomination, twice as a solo act, and twice as part of his duo The Delightful Sausage<\/a>, alongside 2024 winner Amy Gledhill<\/a>. He is, as I tease him when we speak, a comparatively senior winner, the oldest since Bridget Christie, also 42, 13 years ago. \u201cFinally, a victory for the middle-aged white man!,\u201d he retorts, then bursts into laughter. \u201cCommon sense at last!\u201d<\/p>\n
