It was her very first film and it won her an Oscar. But can Callie Khouri now make it work on stage with songs? She talks about what made her write it \u2013 and how little has changed since<\/p>\n

\u2018I have a world-class case of beginner\u2019s luck,\u201d says Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar for her very first screenplay, Thelma & Louise<\/a>. She also scored a hit with her first TV series, Nashville<\/a>, which lasted six seasons. And at 68, she is taking on another first by penning a musical theatre version of Thelma & Louise, hoping her luck hasn\u2019t run out. \u201cI hope that this is not the end of that streak,\u201d she laughs. \u201cThat I don\u2019t hit a wall here and slide down it like Wile E Coyote.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thelma & Louise isn\u2019t an obvious bet for a musical. A story that features an abusive marriage, attempted rape, murder and double suicide doesn\u2019t scream \u201cjazz hands\u201d, and Khouri had turned down offers before. \u201cMy agent said, \u2018There\u2019s a guy who wants to meet you to talk about doing Thelma as a stage musical,\u2019\u201d says Khouri. \u201cAnd I just thought, \u2018Well, that\u2019s nuts!\u2019\u201d But the iconic 90s film \u2013 starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis (and a young Brad Pitt) \u2013 is an ultimately triumphant piece of cinema: a feminist road movie driven by the power of female friendship, which still captures imaginations. Khouri was eventually convinced. It\u2019s been a decade in the pipeline, but things took off when uber-producer Sonia Friedman came on board, and now it has premiered at London\u2019s Young Vic, starring Rachel Tucker and Amy Lennox.<\/p>\n
