It is quite a testament to how extravagant \u2013 even Stakhanovite \u2013 his imagination is that during that period he also produced six novels (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2009\/may\/30\/china-mieville-fiction\">The City &amp; the City <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/article\/2024\/jul\/23\/the-book-of-elsewhere-by-keanu-reeves-and-china-mieville-review-pulpy-hijinks\">The Book of Elsewhere<\/a>, co-written with Keanu Reeves), two novellas, two series of graphic novels, a children\u2019s book, a volume of short stories and two works of nonfiction, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2017\/may\/17\/october-china-mieville-russian-revolution\">October Revolution<\/a> and the Communist Manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>It does not mean that these works were, as Graham Greene called The Third Man and Our Man in Havana, \u201centertainments\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2011\/may\/08\/embassytown-china-mieville-review\">Embassytown<\/a>, to my mind, is the best translation of deconstructionist philosophy into science fiction \u2013 but certainly The Rouse is a quantum jump in terms of ambition, moral seriousness and stylistic bravado. It means that rather than classifying Mi\u00e9ville with \u201cthe new weird\u201d or \u201cspeculative fantasy\u201d, he ought to be compared to Roberto Bola\u00f1o or Mircea C\u0103rt\u0103rescu.
