It’s befitting for the court of this particular King Creon (Max Bennett), whose condemnation of his niece Antigone (Nina Cassells) after she defies him in retrieving her brother’s body for burial, is framed as an inability to even question let alone reconsider his own laws. The tar circle becomes a dividing line, separating the hypothetically welcome from the unwelcome in Thebes. The line is eventually crossed in more ways than one, and the oily substance spreads, smearing those irrevocably affected by the mess.

Nina Segal’s revisiting of the Sophoclean tragedy is keen to explore the far-reaching consequences of our actions and their trickle-down effects. It’s pleasingly experimental, but not all ideas coalesce in Jeff James’s production, in which a combination of fourth wall breaking and direct address sees the boundaries blur further. Cast members break away from their Greek characters to relay anecdotes that could well be their own. Reaching for a mic that hangs suspended above the stage, one tells of watching a fox decompose, another of a husband dying and another of his teenage daughter’s suicide. The stories are moving, even if links to Antigone’s own plight are somewhat tenuous.

An emphasis is placed on emotions over actions, but having each key player describe their anger, fear or sadness, rather than showing us, has a distancing effect that prevents this production from striking the chords it might. Watching them mine seemingly personal memories in order to find a connection to these centuries-old characters is a little like watching a workshop in method acting.

Antigone Exits runs at the Minerva theatre, Chichester, until 17 October.

Minerva theatre, ChichesterNina Segal’s revisiting of the Sophoclean story is pleasingly experimental – but not all the ideas work in Jeff James’s fourth-wall breaking production Libations were typically poured to appease the gods and honour the dead in Ancient Greece, but as a black, tar-like substance is dribbled here, forming a runny circle on a...

[1

post-16006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
