Wade was overturned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just couldn\u2019t understand, literally how it was possible\u2026legally, how that decision came to be, and how much I had taken that right for granted,\u201d said Carrie Heitman, co-founder and producing artistic director at Hook &amp; Eye, in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Like others, Heitman felt \u201cpretty despondent\u201d after the supreme court ruling. Then, she asked herself, \u201cIf I can\u2019t make policy, what can I do? What can a group of artists do?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The answer for Heitman, of course, was to make theater\u2014the type of investigative, transhistorical, genre-blending theater that Hook &amp; Eye does best.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Plan C<\/em>, which premieres at The Tank in Manhattan on March 12, shifts between 1620s Brussels and present-day West Virginia to tell the stories of two renegade women, or \u201ccodebreakers,\u201d as Heitman calls them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first is Alexandrine Von Taxis, who became Imperial Postmistress of the Holy Roman Empire after her postmaster husband died during the Thirty Years\u2019 War. Von Taxis created one of the first black chambers\u2014a \u201csecret spy room,\u201d Heitman said\u2014intercepting, translating, and decrypting messages in code.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was basically early modern diplomacy \u2026 eventually, every country had these things called \u2018black chambers,\u2019\u201d Heitman explained. After learning of Von Taxis\u2019 story, Heitman and the Hook &amp; Eye team asked themselves, <em>What\u2019s a modern day black chamber?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So the character of Charley Gibson, who runs an underground abortion pill distribution operation from her family\u2019s hardware store in West Virginia, was born.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Von Taxis, played by Elizabeth London, and Gibson, played by Vann Dukes, don\u2019t interact directly in the play. However, they\u2019re woven together through movement choreographed by Leslie Gal\u00e1n Guyton and original musical compositions by Ian Scot Williams. The characters \u201c[work] in sync, even though they\u2019re centuries apart,\u201d Heitman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Hook &amp; Eye planned to focus mainly on Gibson\u2019s present-day story, but after playing an in-progress version of the show for test audiences, \u201cit became clear after getting audience feedback\u2026how much they were curious about the past,\u201d Heitman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Plan C <\/em>held its first research and devising workshop in March 2023. More actors joined the ensemble in December, and in July 2025, several developmental showings and iterations later, Hook &amp; Eye performed a version of the play for Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College. By then, they had received the invitation to run at The Tank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really think audiences can hold contradictions\u2014in content, and form. That\u2019s my belief,\u201d Heitman continued, adding \u201cI like to provide as many surprises as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to joy, humor, and collaborative generation\u2014each Hook &amp; Eye play is co-authored by an ensemble of performer-devisors\u2014a core company value is intellectual provocation. \u201cA repetitive cultural diet limits curiosity and civic growth,\u201d reads one point on Hook &amp; Eye\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hookandeyetheater.com\/about\">mission statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before the show begins, attendees will have the option to respond to prompts by writing a letter to be read aloud during the play. Some letters from a developmental showing of the play read \u201clike \u2018Dear America, stop policing the world\u2019\u2026others were like \u2018I would change my religious beliefs if I knew it would help you suffer less,\u201d Heitman recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think New York City needs a play about abortion,\u201d Heitman stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead of aiming to persuade audience members, <em>Plan C<\/em> asks \u201cWho or what would you cross a line for?\u2026How are these women inspiring you, and what are ways you want to take action, big or small?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur friends in Minneapolis have obviously shown us what a network can do,\u201d Heitman said. \u201cSometimes the quiet acts of resistance have wide reach\u2014one-to-one relationships\u2026 helping a woman get the care they need\u2026 that matters,\u201d she continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Plan C <\/em>is funded in-part both by the New York State Council for the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. \u201cThat really buoyed us. These are the largest grants we\u2019ve ever gotten,\u201d Heitman added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The show is produced by The Tank and Hook &amp; Eye Theater, conceived and directed by Heitman, and co-authored by nine core ensemble members (who perform in the show!), plus an additional group of devising artists.\u00a0<br \/><em>Plan C <\/em>runs at The Tank from March 12 until April 12, 2026.
