The European Commission presented its new proposal on a new common approach on returns following the racist agenda of the far right.
The Left in the European Parliament continues to be a vocal advocate for the rights of migrants, condemning the increasing militarisation of Europe’s borders and the growing practice of migrant detention. As the EU advances policies that increasingly resemble Fortress Europe, the Left warns that these actions undermine basic human dignity and perpetuate racial discrimination.
The proposals currently by the European Commission are part of a dangerous and racist project of “remigration”, a strategy that would deport children, women and men not because they have committed any crimes, but because of a political agenda that seeks to limit immigration, regardless of the human cost.
Even more, this proposal will enable EU Member States to deport persons to almost any country. Offshore detention centers i.e. “return hubs” are inhumane and shameful.
Left MEP Estrella Galán (Sumar, Spain), Coordinator of LIBE Committee in the European Parliament: “The Commission proposal to establish ‘return hubs’ outside the EU, crosses a dark new line. Deporting migrants and refugees to prisons in third countries, and stripping them of their rights, has long been the far right’s project. This mass deportation and detention plan violates EU and international law, ignoring Europe’s history. Europe must abandon these inhumane policies and ensure legal, safe pathways and a dignified reception for those in need of protection. Ours is the right side of history, not theirs.”
The Left group in the European Parliament will continue to fight against those inhumane policies who put children, women and men in danger. The proposal to further fortify Europe and increase detentions of migrants is not only a failed approach; it is also a dangerous one. We must stand together for a more humane, just Europe.
