The problem with military spending is that you eventually run out of other people’s public services to gut.
NATO Secretary-General, Marc Rutte’s sycophantic sucking up to Donald Trump recently should concern everyone who values health, transport and public services, The Left remarks today.
In a text message published like a trophy by Donald Trump, Rutte admitted that “Europe is going to pay in a BIG way” to start increasing defence spending to 5% of GDP. Today, the NATO head doubled down on his fawning, referring to Trump as ‘daddy’ in a press conference.
With no plans to raise funds from taxes on billionaires or corporate profits, the only way NATO members will be able to afford this spending on defence will be by taking it from public services and giving it to hugely profitable arms manufacturers in the USA and elsewhere.
The Left’s co-ordinator on the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Marc Botenga (PTB/PVDA, Belgium) said: “Mark Rutte’s sucking up to Donald Trump is pathetic. The Secretary-General of NATO is clearly proud to make European workers pay “big” for weaponry from the USA and multi-billion dollar arms companies. The Left says no thank you.”
