Left MEP Carola Rackete passes the baton The Left

Champion of climate action will be dearly missed by The Left in the European Parliament

The Left in the European Parliament extends a heartfelt goodbye to Left MEP Carola Rackete as she announces stepping down today.

As an ecologist, climate activist and former ship’s captain, Carola is a greatly admired figure of the The Left as a person of conviction who has always led by example. Elected to the European Parliament for Germany’s Die Linke, she sat in the ENVI, ECON and AGRI committees where she championed the cause of climate action and consistently stood up for those most affected by the impacts of climate change and the biodiversity crisis.

In a statement today, Carola Rackete said: “My candidacy and mandate have always aimed to contribute to the renewal of the Die Linke party – a process that is progressing successfully. As a person active in social movements, my team and I have from the start discussed shaping the mandate collectively and this collective spirit is now being realised through my resignation. I thank all voters and especially all party members who have placed their trust in me.”

Co-Chair for The Left Martin Schirdewan (Die Linke, Germany) added: “Carola is a hero to so many people across Europe and we very much share that feeling here in The Left. We are proud of the work we have done together with Carola in the Parliament over the past year. The legacy she leaves will continue as we keep up her struggle for climate action and a just transition for all.”

The Left very much looks forward to working with her successor from Die Linke, to continue the fight for workers’ rights, climate action and antifascism in the European Parliament.
