The Left condemns in the strongest terms the revelations that Hungary’s Orbán regime allegedly attempted to recruit spies inside EU institutions.
The news that Hungary’s government allegedly tried to recruit spies inside EU institutions is a shocking reminder of how deep corruption and political manipulation run in Brussels. Even more outrageous, the European Commission wants to investigate itself, as if it can be both judge and accused. Once again, it hides behind “internal procedures” instead of confronting the problem head-on.
Orbán’s regime has systematically eroded the rule of law, silenced critical voices, and weaponised EU funds to strengthen its grip on power. Now, with those allegations, it’s clear this threat doesn’t stop at Hungary’s borders.
Left MEP Anthony Smith (La France Insoumise, France) said: “These revelations are of exceptional gravity: if they are confirmed, this would constitute a frontal attack on the rule of law and the integrity of our European institutions. It is also a warning for Europe: everywhere the far right governs, it seizes control of the state apparatus, attacks the independence of the judiciary, and normalizes illegal interference, political surveillance, and cronyism. We demand an independent investigation, the immediate sealing of the affected systems, a security review by the Commission, and, if necessary, criminal proceedings. No commissioner, no government can place itself above common rules. Full solidarity with the whistleblowers and journalists who brought this matter to light.”
The Commission’s credibility is on the line. If it continues to hide behind bureaucracy and self-investigation, it becomes complicit in the very corruption it claims to fight.
The Left demands an independent inquiry, led by the European Parliament, with full transparency and public accountability. Brussels must stop handling political scandals behind closed doors.
