Join us on Friday night at the IFC Center in the West Village as we co-present the 9:30 screening of “Steal This Story, Please!”, a galvanizing new documentary that looks back on 30 years of Democracy Now and its fearless host Amy Goodman. The Indypendent’s Editor-in-Chief John Tarleton will introduce the movie. We’ll also have a table with recent back issues plus Indy merch.
Put out a daily newscast for 30 years and you will have plenty of archival footage to draw from. “Steal This Story” draws brilliantly on that treasure trove of material as familiar faces from Democracy Now—Goodman, her co-hosts Juan Gonzalez and Nurmeen Sheikh, former correspondents Jeremy Scahill and Sharif Abdel Kouddous among others—relive landmark moments in DN’s history and narrate its growth from a fledgling show that aired on nine radio stations to a national and international juggernaut that is now broadcast on more than 1,600 radio and television stations in the US and around the world.
More than just a trip down memory lane, Steal This Story is a meditation on the importance of independent media in a time when corporate legacy media is collapsing all around us. At The Indy, we also passionately believe in the importance of independent media. The history of DN and The Indy have overlapped on many occasions. Talented members of our team—including Mike Burke and Ana Nogueria—have gone on to do great work at DN. And members of the DN team have frequently contributed articles to The Indy, especially hungry young DN interns and fellows looking for additional opportunities who have found The Indy to be a space where they can learn and grow as journalists.
This Friday is May Day. Protests will be popping off all day in New York City with late afternoon rallies and marches in Lower Manhattan as people get off work. Take the streets to demand a better world, get a bite to eat afterwards with friends and comrades and then come on over to the IFC Center at 323 6th Avenue and join us for the 9:30 screening of “Steal This Story.” When you purchase your ticket here, type in Goodman-15 in the box for promotional codes and your ticket price will be discounted to $15 instead of the regular $20 charge. See you there!
