World leaders are in New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly, which coincides with Climate Week. It comes after months of climate-fueled extreme weather around the world, including heat waves in North America and Europe, wildfires in Africa, flash flooding in Asia and a record-breaking El Niño.
Climate campaigner Bill McKibben says that while it’s too late to prevent the climate crisis from unfolding, solar and wind energy are now cheap enough “to blunt its worst excesses.”
We also speak with Kavita Sthanumurthy, a former software engineer at Amazon and a member of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice. She says the artificial intelligence boom is largely being powered by dirty fossil fuel, even as companies like Amazon claim they use 100% renewable energy. “We did our own independent research and found that it was closer to 22%,” says Sthanumurthy.
