Regarding the agreement in the tariff dispute between the EU and Donald Trump, Martin Schirdewan, co-Chair of The Left, said:
“While Trump will continue to earn billions of dollars more with this deal, the EU Commission is jeopardising thousands of jobs in Europe by caving in to the U.S. demands.”
“Those who face a bully with patience can only lose in the end. This deal is a disgrace for the European Commission and a slap in the face for all EU residents.”
“Even before the summer recess, Commission representatives in the Trade Committee were brimming with optimism. They assured MEPs that a 10% base tariff would never be accepted. Such base tariffs are illegal, and the EU is making them legal with this deal. So much for the EU’s commitment to a rules-based international trading system.”
“I expect Ms. von der Leyen and the EU Commission to make concrete proposals on how jobs in the EU will now be protected. The Left demands massive investments in an active industrial policy that secures jobs and guarantees better wages.”
